Lewes Drama Collective - LDC (formerly Lewes Theatre Youth Group - LTYG)
Award winning Lewes Drama Collective - Acting classes and holiday workshops in Lewes, East Sussex
Lewes Drama Collective students meet during school term time to learn about the world of performing arts through fun drama games and theatre productions that will provide the skills needed to become a performing artist.
In addition, members may also try their hands at stage management, directing, lighting and sound, as well as a variety of theatre production skills.
Learning how to act
Groups are coached and directed by professional actors and teachers who use specialist acting exercises, games and focused drama workshops to create a didactic experience that will drive the students to achieve their best whilst having a great time.
Our stage acting and performing arts learning process involves:
- character analysis and development
- vocal training
- movement and interpretation
- text evaluation
- scene study
- regular feedback
- individual and group tuition
As well as performing monologues, taking on scripted roles and devising their own pieces, students can work with experienced back stage crews in order to learn more about the entire process of theatre production.
We are proud to offer our students regular access to the stage at the All Saints Centre in Lewes for annual major productions.
Led by Tim Rowland, James Firth-Haydon and Timothy Telford, we produce a number of major, medium and small theatre production and shows each year within our programme, enabling all drama students to practice their craft in different stage settings.
Productions and Performances
Our Youth Group has been running for over a decade, whilst our Junior Club was founded in 2015 and have already put on some great productions, including The Lion, The Witch & The Wardrobe, The Wizard of Oz and Rudyard Kipling's classic tale of The Jungle Book. Their latest production was a brand new panto inspired by the 300 year old legendary tale of Robinson Crusoe.
In the past, our youth group members have presented shows on stage as part of Lewes Little Theatre's main season, including His Dark Materials - Part 1, Robin Hood, Around the World in 80 Days, Treasure Island, Alice in Wonderland, The Hound of the Baskervilles and The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe.
The next major production for the Lewes Drama Collective's Youth Group is His Dark Materials - Part II:
Our Adult Collective performed their very first show at the All Saints Centre in Lewes on 15th September 2019 titled Beatus Medium - a brand new play by Tim Rowland. The Saturday School students created their own unique multi-media production which was presented earlier on in the year to friends and family of the cast.
Other productions that our students have performed include an array of current and traditional stories including The Adventures of Jason and the Argonauts, Collected Grimm's Tales, The Caucasian Chalk Circle, Animal Farm, Lord of the Flies and a number of unique variety shows wherein students choose their own pieces and performing arts methods.
Students are aged 5 years and up, and come from Lewes (East Sussex, UK), surrounding towns and villages within the area.
Most members have been with our group for at least 2 years, with some for over 10 years and some only recently having joined.
We are always happy to welcome new members and offers a free taster session to any young person who would like to try before they commit.
100% learning experience
We were delighted with the feedback from our Student Satisfaction Survey in which 100% of our students said that they enjoy the workshops, whilst feeling that they are learning and have become more able to focus on tasks.
It is very reassuring to know that since the students have started with us, the majority also feel more positive, better about themselves and more confident when trying something new.
Here are just a few comments from some of our students:
- “I joined to learn how to act and be on stage. What I like most is that the tutors teach us like professionals.”
- “Being a member means I can learn new styles of acting.”
- “To further my drama skills I joined and have since learnt many on stage and off stage techniques.”
