The Hammond School, Chester
Theatre Arts at The Hammond - Acting. Singing. Music. Movement. Collaboration. Expression. Performance.
The Hammond is a performing arts boarding school based in Chester offering full-time vocational training to young performers aged 11 – 19. Recognised as a national centre of excellence for Dance training, and a member of the Music and Dance Scheme (MDS), The Hammond provides funded places for talented dancers aged eleven to sixteen.
In recent years we have further expanded our provision for Acting and Music training. We developed our Theatre Arts courses to support aspiring young actors, musicians, and performers in reaching their full potential as creative and performing artists. Our Theatre Arts courses are fun, challenging, and rigorous and students in Years 7-11 can expect to receive upwards of 16 hours of vocational training per week with classes running alongside our outstanding academic curriculum.
Theatre Arts Foundation students will follow the core curriculum, allowing students the opportunity to develop, explore and expand their skills through the first three years of their training. Core classes include: Actor’s Workshop, Music Ensemble, Improvisation, Acting for Camera, Musical Theatre, Dance Technique, Movement, Scene Study, Audition Technique and Physical Theatre, and students in Year 9 will complete an RSL Level One qualification in Creative and Performing Arts.
Before entering year 10 students are given the opportunity to choose an area of focus for their Specialist training. Students can choose to focus on Acting or Music Performance and will spend two years honing their skills in their chosen area whilst continuing to follow our core performance curriculum.
Additional Specialist Acting classes include: Contemporary Theatre, Classical Theatre, Acting Technique Voice and Speech and Additional Music Performance classes include:
Composition, Musicianship Vocal and Music performance and Music Theory. Specialist students will complete an RSL Level Two qualification in Creative and Performing Arts.
Our Advanced courses offer full-time pre-drama school or pre-music college training. Students get used to the demands of conservatoire-style tuition in a professional, performing arts-focused environment and train in their area of focus for over 20 hours per week.
This course is popular with students who have completed years 7-11 in traditional education environments and who are now ready to put all their energy and focus into their performing arts training.
The advanced course covers a broad and diverse curriculum and is delivered by industry professionals and specialist staff. Students can expect to complete between 12 - 15 units over the two years of study with many units resulting in both in-house and public performances.
The Theatre Arts Advanced program leads to the completion of the RSL Level 3 Extended Diploma in Creative and Performing Arts, a vocational qualification worth the equivalent of 3 A-Levels and most Advanced students will also complete a LAMDA Grade 8 (Gold) qualification as
part of their first year of training.
Advanced students can choose to take one or two optional A Level or Level 3 qualifications alongside their Theatre Arts course.
